Artist Statement
My art is influenced by dark fairy tales that have always been with me. I create isolated figures of people, animals, or objects that I place anywhere from ethereal to realistic locations. I embrace a stylized gesture of form in my figures and I use a softened color tone.
Since I was little, I have drawn images of figures and landscapes in an effort to create meaning in a melancholy world.
I work in pen and ink, colored pencil, watercolors, acrylic paint, and mixed media.
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, I grew up in different relatives’ households in Iowa, Arkansas, and California and I lived in small houses in the country, the woods, a farm, and apartments in the city.
I studied art at Otis Art Institute, Chouinard Institute of the Arts [now California Institute of the Arts], and California State University Northridge. Paradoxically, with all of this art education, I [like many artists] am mostly self-taught in my art.
